Community Safety
Working together for a safer East Lothian
East Lothian Community Safety Forum was established in 1997. Since then, community safety partnership work has gone from strength to strength and community safety is now one of the key elements of the East Lothian Community Planning Partnership.
The overall aim of partners is to work together to make East Lothian an even safer place to live.
Current community safety priorities are as follows:
- Fewer people in East Lothian will be the victim or cause of crime or antisocial behaviour [logic model];
- Everyone living in, working or visiting East Lothian will be safer [logic model];
- East Lothian roads will be safer for all road users [logic model];
- Fewer people will be affected by Hate Crime [logic model];
- Fewer people will be affected by domestic abuse [logic model].
These priorities were agreed by the partners and based on an analysis of the local community safety context (PDF). Partners meet regularly to monitor progress against these priorities and to develop activities accordingly Community Safety Theme Group.
Funding is available to support community safety activity through the Safer East Lothian Fund.
The Safer East Lothian Fund provides funding for community safety related projects and initiatives. In 2010/11, funding available under this fund amounted to £180,000.
To date, funding has covered a wide range of youth diversionary activities, CCTV, speed reactive signs, drug and alcohol initiatives, violence against women work, policing initiatives, road safety education and fire and home safety interventions. Current Projects (PDF)
Applicants to the Safer East Lothian Fund need to fulfil the funding criteria laid out for the Fund. Bids submitted are assessed by an Awards Sub Committee accordingly. One of the criteria requires applicants to identify how they will contribute to achieving one or more of the SOA community safety outcomes.
The allocation and administration of the Safer East Lothian Fund is set to be reviewed during the current year.
